I was very excited about this week’s interview because I got to visit Paracombe Wines on a beautiful sunny day in the Adelaide Hills, and get some of my Christmas shopping done at the same time!
Owner Kathy Drogemuller and her husband bought the land in 1983 after the Ash Wednesday bush fires. After discovering Paracombe’s 19th century viticulture heritage, they decided to give winemaking a go.
Starting by selling a few cartons transported in the back of their car, to now transporting pallets of wine by trucks loads to consumers in South Australia, interstate and beyond, Paracombe Wines have successfully built on the area’s long history of wine.
In today’s episode of Be The Drop, we discuss overcoming fateful obstacles, the importance of storytelling in building a wine brand, and how to show the human side of a successful business…

“Third party endorsement is a really important part of our marketing.”
Listen to this episode to hear Kathy from Paracombe Wines’s business story (share this on Facebook!):
In this episode you will learn:
- How to launch an unknown brand from scratch
- The relationship between good staff, shared values and business growth
- The importance of the experience in marketing
- How to use history and storytelling to create brand connection
“It’s important to use humour and visual excitement. People engage with these things.”
I loved chatting to Kathy about the importance of being human when building a brand. Human does not mean informal or slap-dash. If your brand is formal and traditional, you can still authentically convey its human side without seeming unprofessional.
We know because this is what we do every day for our clients. Our clients range from traditional corporate to young consumer brands. So if you need some marketing, storytelling, or communications advice, just send us a message.

I can’t wait for the next installment of Be The Drop, to bring you more insights into the power of business storytelling. Everything we discussed in this episode makes sense to me. But does it makes sense to you? I’d love to hear your comments!
