Across cultures, music is universally significant in telling stories. Music can evoke strong emotions that can bring us to tears or simply make us want to dance. But how does music cause social change? With marriage equality very much on the agenda, I decided to investigate this question with award winning music composer and celebrated cabaret performer, Josh Belperio.

In June 2017, Josh premiered his sold-out cabaret show Scarred For Life, which opened to unanimous five-star reviews at the Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival. As a proud gay man, Josh recently released a song in response to the plebiscite vote on same-sex marriage; his video has been viewed over 200K times and shared more than 2.5K times.

In  today’s episode of Be The Drop, Josh Belperio talks about why you must be both specific and honest in storytelling, he explains why vulnerability is a strength (not a weakness), and we discuss why music has a unique ability to communicate powerful messages…

“Music triggers every area of the brain. Add language & you have an unstoppable combination.”

Listen to this episode to hear Josh Belperio answer the question, how does music cause social change:

In this episode you will learn:

  • About the science of music
  • How detail can lead to relatability
  • The power of vulnerability & imperfection
  • How to own your story and feel empowered
  • How you can support QLife  – Australia’s first nationally-oriented LGBTI counselling service

“The professional puts their work out there. The amateur keeps it to themself.”

I loved how much Josh connected with the concept of Be The Drop, that a waterfall begins with one drop. He equated it to what happens when a video like his plebiscite response goes viral, spreading “like wildfire”.

People connect with what’s real. The really clever brands are already using this truth not only to effect social change but to develop their brand story into something more honest, delivering a message that really resonates.

I can’t wait for the next installment to bring you more insights into the power of storytelling.

Everything we discussed in this episode makes sense to me. But does it makes sense to you? I’d love to hear your comments! And if you want more behind the scenes stuff and bits not included in the show, follow @be_the_drop on Instagram or Twitter.
