I’m acutely aware of the power of storytelling however, I haven’t personally experienced the impact that traumatic stories can have on someone who is listening to and absorbing them on a daily basis. My guest this week understands this extremely well and used this experience to become a career transition specialist, founding Out of the Blue Consulting.

Melanie Dancer had an extremely successful career in the SA police force in victimology, with the sexual assault unit, on the state’s Paedophile Task Force and as a police negotiator. The stress due to the victims stories and her heavy workload caused her to burn out – it was through navigating this change that Melanie embarked on her current journey.

In episode 205 of Be The Drop, Melanie provides honest insights into what it’s like to be a first responder and help victims of crime. She shares her pivotal career changing moment and provides tips on how to plan for your own career transition or progression.

Melanie Dancer discusses career transition tips

“It’s incredibly humbling when someone is telling you the most intimate details of their life.

In this episode with Melanie on career transition, you will discover:

  • Melanie’s incredible journey within the police force in South Australia
  • A bit about her incredibly stressful but valuable work on the SA Paedophile Task Force
  • How Melissa transitioned out of the police into her current career
  • Some of the common personal challenges faced by police officers
  • The impact of cortisol levels on first responders
  • Why Melanie believes everyone has the intrinsic ability to lead

“Everyone’s story is interesting. Be brave enough to be vulnerable and present for someone so that you can really hear it.”
